I am working in NHDT-CRU.
In our unit NHDT HP separator is in horizontal position whereas CRU HP separator is in vertical position. And KHDS unit HP separator is in vertical position.

NHDT system pressure : 20 Kg/cm2-g
CRU system pressure : 20 Kg/cm2-g
KHDS system pressure : 25 Kg/cm2-g

What can be the possible reason ?

Different licensors have different design philosophies. In addition to what the other respondent indicated, a horizontal drum is favored when there is a water wash and the need to do a 3 phase separation, although some licensors still use vertical drums even for 3 phase separation.

Whether a separator vessel is vertical or horizontal depends on the licensor’s experience and preference. Wherever emulsion conditions are prone to occur, horizontal is preferred. Vertical drums require less plot space.

Better gravity separation can be achieved in horizontal separators because droplets settle perpendicular to rather than counter-current to the vapour flow. So horizontal separators are generally used if either slugs of liquid in the mixed phase feed or foaming is expected. They are also used where headroom is restricted. Vertical separators occupy a smaller footprint and are easier to clean at turnaround. Also, in vertical separators, liquid removal efficiency is completely independent of the liquid level in the separator (provided it is maintained within its control range).
