Q & A > Question Details
In my plant, Vaccum Column LT LP tapping body nozzle is badly choked, all the dechoking options tried but no success found. We have only one LT tappings. As of now we have installed a PI at bottom in place of LT HP tapping, on the basis of this PI value level column is being operated. However this is not the permanent solution unless until we shutdown the column. Is there any other option available to monitor level of column??

You might be able to bring in a tower scanning service and have them set up their nuclear source/detector at your normal interface. That would give you a measurement, but you would need to work out details of how you would actually monitor the level. If it's short term only you could pay an individual to monitor continuously. If it's longer term you would need to figure out how to transmit the output to someplace where it's easier to monitor and manipulate the output.

You may use nozzle assigned for PI and do the modifications outside of the column for LT tapping by connecting LT LP tagging to nozzle located at PT. Then recalibrate level in DCS with the help of instrument engineer. Use any nozzle available near to LT LP tagging which was choked and can temporarily solve your problem by connecting that nozzle to LT LP tapping (only outside modifications required for column and u dont need turndown column)
