While heat exchangers are commonly used, there are alternative technologies available for process fluid heating. Our company specializes in the appication of Direct Steam Injection (DSI) heating for water and a variety of difficult to handle slurries, sludges, and aggressive fluids. One aspect of DSI heating technology is the absence of hot surfaces where mineralization and scale can build-up and reduce tube wall efficiency. The use of high velocity steam also keeps the steam injector clean. The draw back of course is that your application will need to be able to tolerate the addition of condensate. See www.pro-sonix.com

There are a number of alternatives for Online cleaning of heat exchangers. We do have experience in removing irons sulphide deposits, ammonium salt fouling, asphaltene precipitation, some polymer types, corrosion byproducts etc. Before recommending a chemical online program it is mandatory to understand the chemistry, which caused the fouling. A survey of the fouled system and analysis of sample material may help to recommend the correct chemical program

Dependent on type of exchanger e.g. u tube, vertical, horizontal. Deposit, temperature. Online cleaning is possible. An alternative is to retro fit mods to the shell and header or at fabrication stage. Another alternative is to use a mechanical "fastclean" technology
http://www.tubetech.com/CS-BPoil1.asp e.g. which cleans in 3 hrs instead of 3 days.
