Q & A > Question Details
In an atmospheric CCR reforming unit how can measure the chloride content (HCl) of the regeneration vent gas?
If you have a Chlorsorb system how can you measure its efficiency?

The typical method used by refiners to measure HCl content in the regenerator vent gas is detection tubes (Dräger/Gastec/Kitagawa/other). In a Regenerator Vent Gas (RVG) ChlorsorbTM system there should be a detector tube sample point at the inlet and outlet of the Chloride Adsorber section. The HCL concentration can be measured at the inlet and outlet of Chlorsorb and the efficiency can be calculated using the equation below. The HCl concentration at the inlet and outlet of the Chlorsorb are on different orders of magnitude and will require different detector tube measurement ranges. The inlet HCl concentration might be in the range of 1000-3000ppmv and the outlet will be <50ppmv HCl.
Environment regulations vary from region to region. If a more precise test is required in your region US EPA is ‘Method – 26’ may be an option. EPA Method-26 is a wet chemistry method that is a more involved and may require the assistance of an outside testing company.
Chlorsorb efficiency (in %) is measured by:
(HCl in the inlet stream – HCl in the outlet stream) / HCl in the inlet stream * 100.

I agree with observation of Mr.Yongming Zhang. The licnensor will provide the answer very well. In CCR plants, HCl content in the regeneration gas may generally vary between 300 to 2700 vppm and could be measured by Draeger tubes.
It could also be measured by EPA test 26.
About 97 - 98 % of chloride may be removed by the chlorosorb sustem

Chlorsorb system is UOP technique. You can find UOP's suggestion about the chloride content measurer manufacturer from UOP's PDP file, in the instrumentation section.
